about

In May last year I released a trilogy of albums on Bandcamp where 100% of sales are donated to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (www.asrc.org.au) on an ongoing basis.

Now, over a year later, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect Australia. Lockdown measures continue to acutely affect people seeking asylum - as well as people on bridging, temporary protection and Safe Haven Enterprise visas - whose employment has been interrupted or lost and who have no access to government payments.

This album marks the 4th entry into this series of releases, with all ongoing sales donated to ASRC.

On this project I introduce a totally new alias, Ashcan Cyborg. While this project shares some touchstones with previous house productions, in general it strikes a more acid and melodic electro sensibility.

In terms of aesthetic and mood, the album channels the energy of 1980s and 90s independent and small press science fiction comics. An ‘ashcan’ is a miniature, hand-stapled, photocopied comic book and this project pictures a cyborg character flexing and leaping through the pages of one of these. Dark but slightly absurd science fiction scenarios are conjured throughout and in some cases a comic book character is imagined – for example, in a name like 'Flowhunter' I picture some sort of time-traveling operative or cosmic energy source seeker.

Hopefully the record hits a balance between mood and club utility (or I should say mix utility, for many). Undoubtedly the past 18 months have seen me leaning towards the former and experimenting with texture, rhythm and taste. This is one of the outcomes and, as odd and niche as its components might seem, is a highly personal project for me.
